2007/8 - From IWVC64 to VSC: the metamorphosis of a club.
Back in Autumn of 2007, via the V.C.B. online forum, Eltjo de Vries and Sean Gladman both individually put out a call to see if there was a club branch of the V.C.B. on “the Island” which we who live on the After some emailing to and fro (and to find out that they both lived round the corner from each other) they set out to contact other V.C.B. members on the I.W. to see what the interest would be in reforming the club. Neither of them had been involved in clubs before - let alone run one - but went on enthusiastically. Just before Christmas 2007, 5 interested V.C.B. members (Eltjo, Sean G, Alan, Darren and John) came together and talked about their likes/ dislikes of clubs that they had been with and what each hoped the club to be: informal, ride outs and having a laugh without the politics and factions that occur in some clubs. It was decided to open the “membership” to all Vespa riders. The first gathering had happened. Christmas came and went and by February 2008 (the second gathering) the number had grown to 10, through word of mouth. A Club Logo was created and The Sloop Inn, Wootton, was established to be the regular place to meet. As the the year progressed, numbers fluctuated from between 3 - 8, but a definate core group of "Regular Riders" was starting to form: Eltjo, Alan, Eddie, Ash, Macca and Sean W. (both who had recently moved down to the IW) and Dave M. arriving later in the year. The I.W. Scooter Rally came and went, as did Woolacombe and some day trips to mainland events. Joining in with The Flying Circus and their rideouts and Dos became a regular thing too. It was soon mooted whether to remain a Vespa only club, or to open up to other makes. The idea was to include not just Lambretta riders, but the modern day scooters that zoom around the island too. After all, new blood is what needs to be attracted, and scooters come in all shapes and sizes. In November 2008, after a lovely sunny day rideout, it was agreed that the club should change. A new club name was discussed; as was a badge design and what the club would be about. In effect, the Motto "No Subs! Just Meet, Chat and Rideout!" remained. The IW Vespa Club 64 simply morphed into the Vectis Scooter Club (V.S.C.) with the hopes that its name would now make all scooter riders and enthusiasts welcome, regardless of make, style. There is no "set quota" of attendance. Everything is informal, laidback and done with an air of fun. Come along and meet us. Visit this site regularly to keep up to date. And if you do ride, then Ride Safely!
